The Maree family realised something simple but powerful: When people travel, what they miss most is the feeling of home. That is why the guesthouses within the Cedar Group were never designed to feel like a typical hotel. Instead, it was created to feel warm, peaceful and welcoming — a place where guests feel comfortable the moment they arrive. A place where someone is genuinely glad to see you.

Where it began
Rooted in family
Some businesses begin with a business plan. Ours began with a family. The Maree family grew up with strong values shaped by farm life, values of hard work, responsibility, hospitality, and caring for people. On a farm, neighbours are welcomed, meals are shared, and people look after one another. Those values never left the Maree family. But life does not always follow the path we expect. There came a time when the Maree family had to start again — rebuilding their lives and businesses from the ground up. What they did have was something far more valuable than money or property: They had their family. And it was from that foundation that the Cedar Group story began.
The Maree family has always believed that business should never come before family. Instead, business should grow out of family values. With that belief, the family began building what would later become the Cedar Group — not as a corporate venture, but as an extension of the way they believe people should be treated; Respectfully, warmly and personally. What began as a single guesthouse slowly grew into something bigger. Not because the family chased growth. But because guests returned. Families told other families. And the spirit of the place began to spread naturally.
From Opstal to The Cedar Group
A story that began in 2019.
Opstal Potchefstroom was founded in 2019 with family values at its centre. What began with four guesthouse rooms grew steadily as guests returned and recommended the warm, personal hospitality they experienced.
The original Opstal story expanded to include both Opstal Guesthouse and Opstal Guestfarm, which grew from 12 rooms to 20. That same commitment to clean, comfortable accommodation, loyal relationships and personal service now lives on across The Cedar Group.
